The Russian Sanctions on Clothes
As the world continues to watch and dread the invasion of Ukraine, many are questioning why other countries can’t get directly involved with the war efforts. Tiktoker, “@nikitadumptruck”, explained it as “the NATO girlies can’t help Ukraine because she isn’t a NATO girly”. (Linked is the hilarious video here.) Surprisingly, this is accurate. Ukraine, not being a part of NATO, can’t be assisted by the “NATO girlies”, the other surrounding countries such as the USA. Instead, they have decided to get involved via economic sanctions.
Companies across the globe are ceasing trade with Russia including clothing companies. Yesterday, the AGolde parent company just announced that they will no longer be sold to Russia as a sort of denim “f-u” to the country. Other companies, such as Armani, have dedicated shows during Milan fashion week to the Ukrainian people, hosting a show in complete silence. Which, if you have never seen or been to a fashion show, isn’t typical. After fourteen years of sponsorship, Adias decided to step away from the Russian football team, leaving them to focus their talents elsewhere. Major, British retailer, ASOS also became disaffiliated with the country, stopping trade similarly to AGolde.
This political take in fashion goes to show that the consumers and their dollar have the power to make a difference. Fashion has always been about representing who you stand for whether it be environmental or just colorful. The world is continuously changing and us fashion addicts should be taking note as it changes.
